Welcome to HOTS! ~ Higher Order Thinking Skills ~
Anyone can teach or learn by just memorizing facts and spitting back basic information. This new information only sticks with us for a brief time; before long, we have forgotten what we learned and miss out on the opportunity to use or build upon it. The real learning comes when we move beyond the most basic level of understanding and begin to apply, synthesize, and analyze what we are taught. Higher order thinking skills are necessary to deepen our knowledge and make learning meaningful on a long-term basis. examples of higher order thinking skills are summarizing, using logic and reasoning, interpretation, making inferences, working as a team, brainstorming, anticipating questions, designing solutions, research, drawing conclusions, presenting and communicating results, and arguing with evidence. The debate process utilizes all of these skills (and more), providing a rich educational experience. Thus, I have chosen science debate as the focus of our HOTS class!
